Northern Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, now draped in snow, if full of winter fun. From the the top of Interstate 75 and Sault Ste Marie, south across the Mackinac Bridge past Saint Ignace and Mackinaw City to the Northern Region of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula it’s all about outdoor winter fun. Cross Country skiers explore Sleeping Bear Dunes, now a sparking winter wonderland. Petoskey, to the south of Traverse City on Little Traverse Bay claims some the Midwest’s best downhill skiing. The 2012 festival, January 13th and 14th, features ice carving competitions, Snowboard and Ski Acrobatic Shows and Sled Dog Musher Rides. Downtown Petoskey hosts the 2012 Winter Blues Festival February 21st through 27th. The fourth annual festival brings a weeks worth of fun to downtown Petoskey businesses and venues. Load up the children and come out for Kids Day Downtown on February 20th, where stores with feature games, puzzles and arts and crafts for the kids – don’t miss the Snowman Building Contest at noon in Pennsylvania Park. Thursday February 23rd features the Blue’s Brews Pub Crawl through downtown Petoskey and runners enjoy the Chase the Blues 5K Fun Run/Walk on Saturday February 25th.
Shanty Creek Resorts, in Michigan’s Chain of Lakes region, features Summit Ski Area and Schuss Mountain Ski Area. Shanty Creek makes an ideal getaway near Traverse City for winter skiing, tubing and snowmobiling. Just outside downtown Traverse City, Mt Holiday and Hickory Hills are convenient options as well – you can be on the slopes just five minutes out of Traverse City. The Boardman Valley and Jordan River Valley east of Traverse City make snowmobilers happy with lots of wide-open spaces and pristine snow conditions.
Intrigued by Dog Sledding? Kalkaska, a half hour east of Traverse City hosts the 2012 Kalkaska Winterfest January 14th. Held at the Kalkaska County Fairgrounds, winterfest features a variety of dog sled races and events along with other festivities. Watch dog sleds race through the Pere Marquette State Forest and also compete in weight-pull contests moving large cargo loads. Kalkaska Winterfest is a delightful way to get outside and enjoy Michigan’s winter fun.
Don’t miss the 2012 Cherry Capital Winter WoW!fest in Traverse City. February 17th through the 19th, join the fun in historic downtown Traverse City for ice sculptures, Winter, Wine and Wow! and the Downhill Dash. There will be live entertainment, Frozen Bed Races and the Frozen Pit Spit Contest among the fun. Beat Michigan’s winter blues in Traverse City.
